Position Overview The Archaeologist performs field surveys, testing, monitoring, and site evaluations as part of the Archaeological Research Center’s Contracts Program. The role collaborates with ARC staff, clients, state and federal agencies, Tribal Historic Preservation Office personnel, landowners, and other public entities to deliver projects on time and within budget. Responsibilities Conduct archaeological field surveys, testing, monitoring, and site evaluations. Perform laboratory work including artifact cataloging, analysis, and photo cataloging. Conduct background research such as record searches and courthouse documentation. Prepare technical reports or contribute to larger reports as needed. Fieldwork Requirements The role requires frequent overnight travel during the field season (generally April through November) with crews working four 10‑hour days. A valid driver’s license and physical fitness for strenuous outdoor work, including hiking, carrying heavy equipment, and operating in varied weather conditions, are essential. Full‑time office work is performed during off‑season periods. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge Of Archaeological theory and methods ArcPro or ArcMap and GNSS survey equipment Microsoft Office suite (Word, Access, Excel) Plains archaeology, particularly South Dakota or surrounding states Skill To Identify prehistoric and historic artifacts and site types Communicate effectively with staff, clients, and landowners Think critically and plan ahead Follow instructions, learn quickly, and complete work on schedule Adhere to administrative requirements established by the State Ability To Understand state and federal historic preservation laws and guidelines Take detailed field notes and apply them to report preparation Work on routine and challenging sites Problem‑solve and anticipate project needs Work individually and as part of a team Adapt to changing project demands and deadlines Maintain a positive, solution‑oriented attitude Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or cultural resources management (or equivalent experience). Practical field and laboratory experience through a certified field school or equivalent training is required. Strong writing proficiency, especially for technical survey or evaluation reports, is desired. Background in Northern Plains prehistoric and historic artifact identification is preferred.
